After 16 seasons with the Athletic Club first team, Óscar De Marcos has confirmed that he will hang up his boots at the end of the current campaign. The veteran full-back made the announcement during Wednesday’s training session at Lezama, bringing an incredible chapter of Athletic Club history to a close.
De Marcos will leave behind a lasting legacy as one of the club’s greatest players, having made more appearances for Los Leones than almost anyone else, second only to the iconic José Ángel Iribar. Over the course of his career, he has played 560 matches, scoring 39 goals and providing 65 assists. His honours include two Spanish Super Cups and, most memorably, last season’s long-awaited Copa del Rey victory, the club’s first in over 40 years. He also played in a Europa League final, five Copa del Rey finals, and four Spanish Super Cups.
Over 400 matches in LALIGA EA SPORTS
De Marcos has featured for Athletic Club in 428 LALIGA matches, scoring 25 goals and assisting 47 times. His league debut came on August 30, 2009, under Joaquín Caparrós, at the old San Mamés against RCD Espanyol. But it was under Marcelo Bielsa that his career truly took off, helping him reach his peak in the 2011/12 season when Athletic Club made it to both the Europa League final against Atlético de Madrid and the Copa del Rey final against FC Barcelona.
In his farewell speech today at Lezama, the place he has called home for the past 16 years since arriving from boyhood club Deportivo Alavés, De Marcos reflected on having fulfilled nearly all of his dreams in football. The only thing missing? A Europa League title. And with the team he’s a part of now, he believes they have a real chance.
With 14 LALIGA EA SPORTS matches left in the season, fans still have time to enjoy the final moments of a true one-of-a-kind player.
