LALIGA is ever so tight

Just two points separate Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona after Matchday 23

News

MAR 11.02.2025

Following Matchday 23 and the draw in ELDERBI DE MADRID at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday night, the LALIGA EA SPORTS title race is still proving to be one of the most fascinating in years. Real Madrid, on 50 points, Atlético de Madrid, on 49, and FC Barcelona, on 48, are the three clear contenders, while fourth-placed Athletic Club, who have 44 points at this stage, are in the mix as well.

To find a similar scenario at this stage of the season, we’d have to go back to 2013/14, the year when Atlético de Madrid ended up taking the title by finishing three points ahead of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid after an incredible finish to the campaign. After Matchday 23 of that season, the three teams were tied on 57 points. Looking at the 38 editions of LALIGA EA SPORTS in which there have been 20 teams in the top division, this season is only the fifth time in which the top three have been within two points of each other with 15 matches remaining, with the other such editions being 1992/93, 2001/02, 2002/03 and 2013/14.

Looking at the results so far, if the top three continue to pick up points at the same rate then this year’s championship could be won with 83 points. That would be the lowest winning tally since 2007, which highlights just how competitive LALIGA EA SPORTS is nowadays and how the top teams don’t have it easy in any games.

Not only are the top three fighting to win this year’s league title, but they’re also still alive in both cup competitions. FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid both finished inside the top eight in the first round of the Champions League, so they’re already in the Round of 16, while Real Madrid are into the playoff round, where they’ll take on Manchester City. Meanwhile, they are all into the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, alongside Real Sociedad. So, not only are these three clubs eyeing the LALIGA EA SPORTS title, but they’re all still dreaming of winning a treble.

At an individual level, several members of these squads are trying to win prizes such as the Pichichi Trophy, with Robert Lewandowski currently leading the competition’s scoring charts with 19 goals, while Kylian Mbappé is right behind on 16. As for the Zamora Trophy, Jan Oblak has only let in 15 goals and is, by some distance, the leading goalkeeper in this ranking.

THE COMPARISON WITH OTHER EUROPEAN LEAGUES

Looking at the other major European leagues, each one of Italy’s Serie A, England’s Premier League, Germany’s Bundesliga and France’s Ligue 1 has a clear leader at this stage. In some cases, there is even a difference of 10 points between first and second, or close to that. In other words, there is no other major European league with a title race that’s as tight and competitive as the one in LALIGA EA SPORTS.
