The first round of this season’s UEFA Champions League has reached its conclusion, with several LALIGA EA SPORTS teams standing out. FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid are all still alive in the competition, with Barça and Atleti qualifying directly for the Round of 16, having finished inside the top eight of the standings.

Los Culés ended up second overall, having won six of their eight fixtures, only drawing once and losing once. Hansi Flick’s side enjoyed some impressive wins in this UEFA Champions League initial phase, defeating giants such as Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund, and producing an incredible comeback win against Benfica at the Estádio da Luz. Barça hope that this can be the year in which they lift the famous European trophy for a sixth time.

Meanwhile, Atlético de Madrid finished in fifth place, just one point behind Los Blaugranas, as the capital city side achieved a record of six victories and two losses. Diego Simeone’s team started off with some frustrations, but ended the league phase brilliantly, playing good football and proving that they are one of the best teams in Europe right now. Their comeback against Bayer Leverkusen at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano and their eye-catching win away at PSG in Paris stand out, and now Los Rojiblancos can look ahead to some knockout football as they aim to win their first ever UEFA Champions League title.

In the case of Real Madrid, they’ll have to go through the playoff round in order to reach the Last 16. They finished 11th, with five wins and three defeats, and they’ll enter this extra round full of confidence, especially since they’ll have the return leg at home, having achieved one of the higher positions.

It was a tough start to this season’s continental competition for the reigning champions, but they have won their final three fixtures and even came close to finishing inside the top eight. They’ll find out their opponent for the playoff round on Friday January 31st, although they already know that it’ll either be Glasgow Celtic or Manchester City. Having won this competition 15 times, Los Blancos will be considered favourites by most no matter who they draw.

In the case of Girona FC, the first-time participants didn’t have much luck, despite putting in some good performances. There were several games where they were close to drawing or winning, but things didn’t fall their way and their first experience of European football ends with one victory. The fans will surely never forget the season in which the Catalan club took on giants such as PSG, AC Milan, Liverpool and Arsenal, undoubtedly some of the greatest clubs in football history.
