We’ve reached the business end of the season, when every victory tastes sweeter and every defeat is more painful. So, the midweek round of action that is about to take place in LALIGA EA SPORTS will have fans glued to their screeAtletioss the evenings of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Matchday 33 kicks off on Tuesday, when two fixtures take place. The first of them is at Mestalla, where Valencia CF have won their past three home games to move well away from the relegation zone. The fans will hope to inspire the team to another home victory, this time when RCD Espanyol pay a visit, with Los Che still dreaming of pulling themselves into the European race, now that eighth place brings with it a ticket to the Conference League.
At 21:30 CEST on Tuesday night, the league leaders are in action. It’s FC Barcelona vs RCD Mallorca at the Estadi Olímpic, and Hansi Flick will hope his team can repeat the performance that delivered them a 5-1 victory over the islanders earlier in the season. A victory here would be key for FC Barcelona’s title chances, and also a good confidence boost ahead of next weekend’s Copa del Rey final.
There are four matches on Wednesday night, starting with two simultaneous kick-offs at the 19:00 CEST slot. Athletic Club vs UD Las Palmas is one of them, and the Basques will hope to make it four victories in a row against the Canary Islanders. Also taking place at that same time is RC Celta vs Villarreal CF, an important game for both clubs’ European aspirations.
Two more games follow at 21:30 CEST, one of them being a Basque derby between Deportivo Alavés and Real Sociedad. After Deportivo Alavés pulled off a shock 2-1 victory at the Reale Arena earlier this season, La Real will seek revenge at the Mendizorroza.
The other Wednesday night game is also a derby, a Madrid derby between Getafe CF and Real Madrid at the Coliseum. Los Blancos have won six matches in a row against Getafe CF, conceding just one goal in that run, so they’ll look to make it seven in a row and to add three valuable points to their tally.
There are four more games on Thursday night, with CA Osasuna vs Sevilla FC and CD Leganés vs Girona FC in the early time slot. The match at El Sadar is a clash between two clubs who are close together in the middle of the table and who have drawn each of their past three meetings, so it should be a competitive contest. The other is a big game in the relegation battle, with both CD Leganés and Girona FC among the poorest performing teams across the past few months.
Attention then moves to the Estadio Benito Villamarín and the Riyadh Air Metropolitano for Thursday’s 21:30 CEST kick-offs, as Real Betis host Real Valladolid and Atlético de Madrid welcome Rayo Vallecano for yet another Madrid derby. For sixth-placed Real Betis, there is fresh motivation after it was confirmed last midweek that fifth place will now be a Champions League spot. Rayo Vallecano, meanwhile, are still within touching distance of Europe too, and will hope to take more points off Atleti after drawing 1-1 with Los Colchoneros earlier this season.
