Youth football coaches from Korea’s K LEAGUE wrapped up the fourth year of collaboration with LALIGA through an intensive training session and are looking ahead to another successful year in 2025. More than 30 coaches visited Spain from November 28th to December 5th, participating in specialised sessions with LALIGA as well as immersing themselves in Sevilla FC’s operations. Their visit also included attending the Sevilla FC vs CA Osasuna match.
As well as specialised sessions with LALIGA experts on the structure of grassroots football in Spain and the LALIGA Methodology, a proprietary system that focuses on a player's holistic development, the Korean coaches also had sessions with experts from Sevilla FC. The club's professionals provided several days of instruction in data analysis, their own training methodology and scouting. Additionally, they toured Sevilla FC’s facilities, including its training complex and stadium, and attended youth team matches, where they observed the high level of youth football within LALIGA clubs and conducted practical match analysis sessions.
For years, the K LEAGUE has attached great importance to strengthening its competition through the development of grassroots football by identifying and implementing improvements in its lower categories through the exchange of knowledge. As such, the league signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which was renewed at the beginning of 2024 and will run until 2026. In recent months, several activities have taken place within the framework of this agreement: In September, CEOs from Korean clubs held knowledge-exchange sessions with LALIGA club CEOs, before senior executives took part in business-focused workshops in November. Now, both the K LEAGUE and LALIGA have taken positive stock of 2024 and announce that 2025 will bring new collaborations for both, with intensive training courses and visits to Spain by Korean executives.
LALIGA has a well-established area of sports development projects, which has already accumulated 850 projects in 55 countries since its creation in 2015, training over 24,000 local coaches in regions like the USA, Vietnam, and India using the LALIGA Methodology and projects such as Train-the-Trainers. The partnership in South Korea is particularly unique, as it integrates efforts to enhance all aspects of football operations and foster connections between clubs from both leagues.
“The agreement with the K LEAGUE is a source of pride for us as it builds on a historic alliance that includes joint participation in tournaments and friendly matches between youth teams. Engaging with LALIGA's ecosystem promotes the exchange of experience on an international level, a teaching philosophy that contributes to raising the level of competition and training models, something that both organisations attach the utmost importance to. We’re pleased with the positive results of 2024, which concluded with a successful coach training programme, and we’re optimistic about the initiatives planned for 2025,” said Sangwon Seo, LALIGA’s delegate in South Korea.
“The K LEAGUE is collaborating with LALIGA, drawing on their expertise and case studies as part of our long-term development roadmap. These efforts will undoubtedly continue in 2025, and we look forward to a lasting partnership between our leagues across various areas, including grassroots football development systems, sports business diversification and internationalisation,” stated Yeon-SangCho, K LEAGUE Secretary General.
