Real Betis Balompié are one of the top teams in LALIGA EA SPORTS, presently and looking back over history. Currently, Los Verdiblancos occupy ninth place in the LALIGA EA SPORTS historical ranking with 2,320 points achieved in the 59 seasons they have played in the top flight of Spanish football. They have had better and worse times, but are currently in their 10th consecutive season in the top flight.

Real Betis boast more than 100 years of history

Real Betis Balompié were founded on 12th September 1907. In 1914, two entities joined together, namely Sevilla Balompié and Betis Football Club, while the club also received the honorary royal title of Real, granted by King Alfonso XIII, in that same year. That’s the origin story of the club’s name.

One of just nine clubs to have won LALIGA EA SPORTS

In the 1934/35 season, Real Betis became LALIGA EA SPORTS champions for the first and only time in their history. It is the most important trophy on the honours list, and makes them one of only nine clubs to have managed to win at least one championship. In addition, they have won three Copa del Rey titles, in 1976/77, 2004/05 and, most recently, in 2021/22, beating Valencia CF in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the Estadio de La Cartuja. Furthermore, in 2005, they entered the UEFA Champions League, becoming the first Andalusian team in history to qualify for that European competition.

Joaquín is Real Betis’ most iconic player

Joaquín is an icon of Real Betis and LALIGA EA SPORTS, having played the most games for the club and the joint-most, tied with Andoni Zubizarreta on 622 appearances, in Spain’s top division. He is an idol for the club’s fanbase, not only for his football but also for how he represents the club everywhere he goes. He is synonymous with art, kindness, enthusiasm and passion, four characteristics that define Real Betis well. In addition to Joaquín, other names that have been key in the history of Real Betis include legends like Rafa Gordillo and Luis Del Sol.

Denilson was the most expensive signing in history in 1998

On 30th July 1998, Real Betis, with Manuel Ruíz de Lopera at the helm, made a major acquisition, signing Denilson as the most expensive transfer in history. The price was 35 million dollars, and the signing excited the club’s fans so much that one story goes that he had to stop in the city of Córdoba, because club officials feared it might be too dangerous for him to come directly to the Andalusian capital, where supporters packed the streets in excitement. When he was presented on 4th August, some 25,000 fans turned up.

ELGRANDERBI is the big match of the year for Real Betis fans

Real Betis’ derby is against Sevilla FC and, officially, the first meeting between these two teams occurred in 1915, shortly after Real Betis as we know it today was formed. They won 1-0 over Sevilla FC thanks to a goal by Alberto Henke goal, who was paraded through the city with a trophy. Unofficially, though, this derby first took place on St. Valentine’s Day 1909. Sadly, the result of that match was lost to history and remains a mystery to this day. In modern times, the derby remains a very important occasion, the game of the year for the club’s fans.
