SÁB 22.02.2025
Real Madrid and Girona FC will do battle once again in Matchday 25 of this LALIGA EA SPORTS season, with the home team fighting to retake first place and with the visitors trying to return to European football. As such, both clubs vitally need the three points, especially since they each come into this game following poor runs of form. The capital city side haven’t won any of their past three league fixtures, with two draws and a defeat, while the Catalans have won just once across their past five league matches.
In recent seasons, these two teams have produced some great games, always with many goals, high-quality football and plenty of emotion. In 2023/24, Los Blancos won both league fixtures, home and away. The first was a 3-0 Real Madrid victory in the Estadi Montilivi, which was a hugely important game since both clubs had the chance to take the lead in the standings. In fact, it was the Catalan outfit who entered that fixture in first place on 19 points, while Real Madrid were a point back in second.
It was actually a very even game, despite the final scoreline. The home side had several chances of their own, but Los Blancos were much more clinical and effective in both areas. Jude Bellingham, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Joselu scored the goals that earned Carlo Ancelotti’s men the three points, and the lead in the table.
As for the next duel between these clubs, that came in Matchday 24 of the 2023/24 season. Then, Real Madrid thrashed Girona FC 4-0, another important win since the two teams were separated by just two points ahead of that top-of-the-table clash. Carlo Ancelotti’s side didn’t give Girona FC any chance of leapfrogging their opponents in the standings, dominating from start to finish to earn an important victory on their way to clinching that season’s championship.
Taty Castellanos’ historic four-goal performance for Girona FC in 2022/23
Spooling back a little further, on April 25th 2023 Girona FC tasted victory in this matchup, when they won 4-2 against Real Madrid at the Estadi Montilivi. Then, their at-the-time starting centre-forward Taty Castellanos scored all four of his side’s goals, making this a memorable date in his own career and in the memories of all the home fans.
As for the current 2024/25 campaign, they’ve faced off once already in LALIGA EA SPORTS and Real Madrid again won 3-0 at the Estadi Montilivi, repeating the scoreline from the previous season. Although the home side started off well, goals from Jude Bellingham, Arda Güler and Kylian Mbappé earned Los Blancos the three points. Now, this Sunday at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Girona FC will aim to snap this run of three consecutive losses against Real Madrid, who’ll look to keep it up as they fight for first place in the table.
