Rene, Pere Pons, Borja Garcia, Alcala, Portu... Girona FC fans will remember these names for years to come after the team secured promotion to LaLiga Santander for the first time in the club’s 87-year history.
Pablo Machin’s side drew 0-0 at Montilivi against Real Zaragoza on Sunday to earn the point they needed to secure promotion, along with already-promoted leaders Levante, with one round of matches left to play. The Catalans have 70 points from 41 games, three ahead of third-placed Getafe, who have an inferior head-to-head record after losing 2-0 and 5-1 in the meetings between the two sides.
Girona notched up 20 victories and 10 draws, and are LaLiga1l2l3’s leading scorers with 64 goals. They have held second place in the standings since Matchday 15 in mid-November last year.
