Athletic Club took a giant stride towards guaranteeing fourth position by beating Sevilla FC 3-1 in their Liga BBVA matchday 35 clash in the San Mamés.
The rojiblanco fans had barely taken their seats when Markel Susaeta launched a majestic corner directly into Beto’s goal after four minutes. It was a stunning moment with which Athletic opened the scoring in a match that was crucial for their European dream. Sevilla were caught off-guard by the goal and it took them time to settle and create any chances.
After the break, the Andalusian side came out with more intensity and tried to win the ball off Ernesto Valverde’s men. But the rojiblancos made the most of the opening minutes once more to increase their lead. Iker Muniain fired a spectacular shot from the edge of the box to beat Beto for the second time in the game. Ander Herrera headed home a pass from Andoni Iraola to give Athletic their third. But Unai Emery’s side, a man down after Diogo Figueiras received his marching orders, refused to give up and 11 minutes from the end, Kevin Gameiro cranked up the excitement by adding his name to the score-sheet.
