Matchday 36 of the Liga BBVA has blown the title race wide open thanks to the defeat of Club Atlético de Madrid and draws from FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF. The bottom of the table, for its part, has also experienced a squeeze with victories for Real Valladolid CF, Elche CF and UD Almería, and Getafe CF’s draw in the Camp Nou.

Atlético de Madrid, the league leader, slipped up against Levante UD in the Ciutat de València and have fallen a little closer to the second-place team, FC Barcelona. The azulgrana were unable to muster more than a draw against Getafe CF but they are still hot on the heels of the rojiblancos with 85 points. Real Madrid also failed to take advantage of Atlético’s defeat and sealed a draw against Valencia in the dying breaths of the match that takes them to 83 points, five behind Atlético de Madrid (with a game in hand).

Further down the table, Sevilla FC and Villarreal CF produced a goalless draw in the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium in a clash in which a European spot was up for grabs. Both teams had plenty of chances, but neither was able to convert.

The bottom of the table threw up a thriller in which UD Almería managed to come back from 1-2 down against Real Betis, eventually winning 3-2 thanks to a goal from Ramon Azeez in added time. The result leaves the rojiblancos one point above the relegation zone, on 36, with two matches left to play.
