One of the most intriguing fixtures in Matchday 26 of the LALIGA EA SPORTS season is the duel between CD Leganés and Getafe CF, who’ll do battle in the south of Madrid. Their derby is historic and it is returning once again. This is the only derby in Spain that has taken place in all of the divisions, from the equivalent of the current Tercera Federación to LALIGA EA SPORTS.
Getafe and Leganés are two neighbouring cities located in the south of Madrid and they each have a strong footballing tradition. Their first meeting in LALIGA EA SPORTS came in 2017, at which point they had gone 4,857 days without facing each other. They then began to play more regularly, before a four-and-a-half-year wait between January 17th 2020 and their first meeting of the current season. In total, they have contested seven derbies in the top flight, with three wins for Getafe CF, one for CD Leganés and three draws.
Now they play their eighth duel in LALIGA EA SPORTS, but in all their history it will be the 70th in an official match, with 23 wins for CD Leganés and 25 for Getafe CF. The first documented match between the two teams was played on April 25, 1948 in the Segunda Regional Ordinaria category. Since then, they have faced each other on numerous occasions, especially highlighting the derbies in the 80s and 90s, when both clubs coincided in Segunda División and Segunda División B.
These are two clubs whose stadiums, the Estadio Municipal Butarque and the Coliseum, are separated by just four kilometres. Both located in the south of the Community of Madrid, less than 10 kilometres from the centre of the Spanish capital, these are two municipalities with a lot of history, culture and more in common. But, when it comes to football, the divide and the rivalry is great.
Struggling CD Leganés hope to bounce back against their rivals
CD Leganés have only won one league game in 2025, which was against Atlético de Madrid. Having dropped several points in the past few matchdays, they’re now just one point above the relegation, with Valencia CF the team in the last of the spaces in the drop zone.
The team from Madrid recently lost to Valencia CF, before they drew with Deportivo Alavés and suffered a big defeat to Real Sociedad. As such, Los Pepineros desperately need points and will hope the motivation of facing rivals Getafe CF can spur them on.
As the home team this time around, they’ll have the fans on their side. It’s a fanbase that hasn’t enjoyed a victory over Getafe CF in LALIGA EA SPORTS since March 30th 2019, a 2-0 at the Coliseum. In fact, CD Leganés have never won a home derby in LALIGA EA SPORTS.
Getafe CF want to stay up and kick on towards Europe
On the other hand, Getafe CF have had a really good start to 2025. Although they just lost to Real Betis last matchday, they have won four away games in a row, so are a big threat to their neighbours this weekend.
Their coach, José Bordalás, is rejecting any talk of European qualification, but it’s true that Getafe CF are now closer to the European berths than to the relegation zone. Another away win would boost their chances of playing on the continent next season, especially given the strong performances of Spanish clubs in Europe this season. There’s certainly a lot at stake this weekend.
