Sevilla FC vs Valencia CF: Two historic clubs battling to meet their objectives

Both these sides are enduring a difficult campaign, with the competitiveness of LALIGA meaning these historic clubs sit much lower than usual.

SÁB 11.01.2025

Sevilla FC and Valencia CF will face off in Matchday 19 of LALIGA EA SPORTS, but this will be a very different kind of meeting to usual. With the Spanish top flight so fiercely competitive, these two historic institutions lie in lower positions than usual. They’ve gone from battling to enter European competition to sitting in mid-table or, even worse, entering the relegation battle. Although they are the fifth and sixth teams in the historic all-time LALIGA table, this has been far from an easy campaign for these two clubs.

In the case of Sevilla FC, they are currently 14th on 22 points. That’s three points behind seventh, the last possible position which could give access to the Conference League, while it’s only seven above the relegation zone. The Andalusian outfit took on Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in the last matchday, falling to a 4-2 defeat. Then, in the last round of the Copa del Rey, they were eliminated when losing 4-1 to UD Almería. As such, their hopes of success in the knockout tournament are also over, so focus turns to this league game against Los Che.

As for Valencia CF, they’re looking to escape the relegation zone, as they’re currently second-bottom on 12 points. That’s four points from Getafe CF and safety. The club recently switched coaches, but new boss Carlos Corberán suffered a dramatic loss in his debut as the team fell 2-1 against Real Madrid by conceding two late goals. As such, both these teams are looking to rebound after league losses against Los Blancos.

Valencia CF have taken points from their past two visits to the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán

The good news for Valencia CF is that they’ve secured positive results from their past two visits to Sevilla FC’s stadium, earning a win and a draw. The win came last season, back in the first matchday of that LALIGA EA SPORTS season, on August 11th 2023, when Los Che triumphed 2-1.

García Pimienta vs Carlos Corberán: Two coaches who want possession

It should be an interesting game at a tactical level, as these are two coaches who like their teams to have the ball. For Corberán, it’s just his second LALIGA game as Valencia CF coach and he hopes the team can play like they did in the first half against Real Madrid. His ideal would be to construct a coordinated unit that looks after the ball, that presses high and that attacks and defends through possession.

As for Sevilla FC’s coach García Pimienta, there is a need to get back to winning ways after the recent losses to Real Madrid and UD Almería. They had been in good form before then, and were starting to play good possession football with the dribbling of Dodi Lukebakio and Stanis Idumbo, the running from deep of Juanlu and the attacking threat of Isaac Romero.

Although García Pimienta has a number of injuries to deal with, he had been finding a solid starting line-up. Now, he may need to make some tweaks ahead of this important clash between Sevilla FC and Valencia CF, two historic clubs trying to get back towards the top end of the table.
