Athletic Club are in excellent form right now, and the Basque team just achieved their fourth league win in a row. Not only are they winning, but they’re playing some spectacular football at the same time, a mix of electric attacking play and solid defensive organisation. All of this has propelled them up the table, where they’re just six points behind LALIGA EA SPORTS leaders FC Barcelona.
Led by Ernesto Valverde, Los Leones made it four wins in a row by overcoming Villarreal CF 2-0 this past matchday. That was an especially important victory as they were facing one of their direct rivals for fourth place, which grants qualification to next season’s Champions League. From the very start of this duel at San Mamés, the home side made life difficult for El Submarino Amarillo, by pressing high up the pitch and keeping the opposition far away from goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala’s goal.
Only one defeat in the past three months
Athletic Club have now gone eight matchdays without losing, having achieved five wins and three draws in this time. Their four consecutive league wins include their triumph over Real Sociedad in the BASQUE DERBY, and the past week’s victories over Real Madrid and Villarreal CF. By defeating so many of the top teams in LALIGA EA SPORTS, it’s clear that Athletic Club are in top form.
Only Girona FC have managed to overcome Los Leones in the past three months, doing so in a game where Paulo Gazzaniga saved three penalties to leave Athletic Club frustrated. What this means is that the Basques are, along with Atlético de Madrid, the most in-form team in the competition, with the likes of Oihan Sancet, Dani Vivian, Beñat Prados and Iñaki Williams playing at a really high level.
Only Atlético de Madrid have won at San Mamés in 2024
In 2024, the only team that has managed to win at San Mamés in any competition is Atlético de Madrid, who won there on August 31st on their visit for LALIGA EA SPORTS Matchday 4, when Ángel Correa struck in the 92nd minute. Every other game Los Leones have played in front of their home support has ended with at least one point staying in the Basque Country. In 2024/25, they’ve played 10 home league games already, with six wins, three draws and the aforementioned loss to Atlético de Madrid.
Adding up all those points, Los Leones boast the best home record in the competition alongside Real Madrid. Both teams have won 21 points at home already, which in the case of Athletic Club is 67% of their current points tally. Their home advantage really is strong, and the Athletic Club fans who pack San Mamés week in week out are dreaming of achieving big things in LALIGA EA SPORTS this season.
