Fact of the week

Recovering possession central to Alguacil’s game plan

Real Sociedad claim the final podium place in the Spanish top flight for dangerous recoveries, which occur when the player who regains possession does so at a point in time when there are more of their teammates ahead of the ball than opposition players. The Basque outfit are also handily placed in fourth position for the number of recoveries recorded per minute. In other words, not only do they excel in terms of the number of recoveries, but also when it comes to their quality.

If we look at Imanol Alguacil’s men’s positional set-up, we can see that they use the full width of the pitch. The boys from San Sebastian occupy fifth spot for the average overall position (48.4m), while they clinch fifth place in the league in terms of team width. La Real’s defensive line is the fourth highest in the division, a criterion that is based on the distance between their own goal and the backline.

Key Player

Solid stopper Gutierrez shines in attack

Miguel Gutierrez, Girona’s flying left-back, is La Liga’s second top-performing defender for the number of attempts on goal, while he lands the final place on the Girona podium when it comes to the number and success of his dribbles. These statistics point to Gutierrez’s attack-minded approach, and they are complemented by the fact that he lies third in the Girona ranks for the number of supporting runs. In addition, when he takes part in the build-up phase, he regularly finds himself in pressure situations. Indeed, only one of his teammates receives more double-pressure passes.

He is also a difference-maker in the defensive phase, where he lies top of the Girona standings for dangerous recoveries, claiming no fewer than 16. In the out-of-possession phase, none of Michel’s charges record more actions at over 28km/hr than Gutierrez. The youngster is clearly a key figure at both ends of the pitch and is central to the league leaders’ direct playing style.

The Match up

Real Madrid & Villarreal go head-to-head

Villarreal, who are enduring some defensive woes, are bracing themselves to come up against the side that register the most attempts on goal in the division and will be trying to work out how to go about countering Real Madrid’s considerable attacking threat. However, for all of their troubles at the back, the Yellow Submarine are shining brightly in other areas. As displayed in the graphic below, the Castellon-based outfit record above-average scores in terms of combination play. They enjoy more possession than most sides in the league and their build-up play in the attacking third is high on quantity and quality. Indeed, Marcelino’s troops post above-average stats for forward passes, passes per possession and passes in the final third. The visitors are likely to look to counter the number of attempts on goal they are likely to face by trying to dominate possession and focus on progressing play.

Remember his name

Mayoral eases into leading pack

Borja Mayoral’s nine-goal haul places him second in the league goalscoring charts, behind Antoine Griezmann and Jude Bellingham. His clinical instincts and never-say-die attitude are proving to be key attributes for Getafe CF, who are in great need of a player with a killer touch to finish the chances they carve out through their direct approach. The Spanish frontman sits top of the Geta charts for the number of attempts on target. However, his performance in this area doesn’t even see him claim a place in LALIGA’s top 20. This just proves how coolly efficient he is in front of goal, where he is one of the league’s leading marksmen without recording a high number of attempts. His shot conversion rate is 31%.

In addition to his goalscoring exploits, Mayoral boasts the best completion rate for long passes in the Getafe ranks, with nearly 78%, and features in the division’s top 10 in this area. These passes are key to Jose Bordalas’s blueprint, which is based on a direct approach in the attacking phase.

Metric of the week

Ball recovery rate

The ball recovery rate refers to the number of recoveries registered by a team per minute. In addition to frequency, ball recoveries can be measured in terms of the area of the pitch in which they occur, the result, the cumulative figures, etc. This figure along with others that are associated with recoveries provide us with a whole host of information about a team’s playing style in the defensive phase and the strategy they adopt when pressing. FC Barcelona are the league’s top dogs for recoveries per minute, chalking up almost four.
