LaLiga will have a strong presence at this summer’s Olympic Games, with no fewer than 29 players travelling to Japan in pursuit of the gold medal.
The opening ceremony in Tokyo may not take place until Friday, but for football fans, the action starts a day earlier with the opening round of men’s group stage matches getting underway this Thursday 22nd July.
1992 gold medalists Spain kick things off with the tournament opener against Egypt (9:30am CEST) in Sapporo. 20 of their squad, including the three permitted overage players Marco Asensio, Dani Ceballos and Mikel Merino, currently ply their trade in either LaLiga Santander or LaLiga SmartBank.
Elsewhere, Real Madrid star Take Kubo features for hosts Japan, with Atlético Madrid defender Nehuén Perez set to captain 2008 gold medalists Argentina. He’s joined in the squad by Cádiz CF goalkeeper ‘Conan’ Ledesma.
