Club Atlético de Madrid has beaten Real Madrid CF 0-1 in the seventh matchday of the Liga BBVA and thanks to this great victory the team is now hot on the heels of FC Barcelona at the top of the table, while the whites labour in fifth place, five points behind their local rival.
The first half in the Santiago Bernabéu was controlled by the red and whites, which had the luxury of going in at half-time with a 1-0 lead. After the whiles dominated early on, a great pass from Koke was pounced on by Diego Costa whose shot from inside the area went under Diego López. Although Karim Benzema's header forced a good save from Thibaut Courtois, most of the opportunities fell to the visitors.
Tiago, with an off-target header and Gabi, with another headed opportunity which was blocked by Diego López, this time from a corner, could have given the visitors a cushion. Carlo Ancelotti tried to rally in the second half by bringing on Gareth Bale and Luka Modrić, but it was Diego Costa who came closest to scoring again in a one-on-one with Madrid's keeper, who was up to the task.
Koke had the clearest chance late in the match but his shot from inside the area hit the crossbar and on the verge of the final whistle Real Madrid came close with an acrobatic strike from Álvaro Morata which Courtois saved. In the end the score remained unchanged and Atlético had again beaten the whites in the Liga BBVA, for the first time since 1999.
