What became of... Adolfo Valencia

Previously… Adolfo Valencia (6 February 1968, Buenaventura, Colombia) is an ex-footballer known in Spain for his time at Club Atlético de Madrid in the 1994/95 season.

His achievements… Valencia was nicknamed 'The Train' as he was a powerful and pacey striker. During his playing days he scored a total of 191 official goals for clubs of the stature of FC Bayern München, Club Independiente de Santa Fe, PAOK FC and Atlético. He also won a German Bundesliga, a Colombian league and cup and an Eastern Conference title with US team the MetroStars.

After hanging up his boots… Valencia decided to retire in 2004, having completed a spell in China in the ranks of Zhejiang Lucheng. He later decided to open a sports coaching school for kids in Colombia.

Did you know… Adolfo Valencia was one the great heroes in the history of the Colombian national side, who beat Argentina 5-0 on 5 September 1993, in a qualifier for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. 'The Train' scored the last goal of the night, culminating an unforgettable victory against an Argentinian side that included great players such as Diego Simeone, Gabriel Batistuta and Fernando Redondo.
