Previously… Jorge Alberto Francisco Valdano (Santa Fe, Argentina, 1955) first played in Spain with Alavés. The forward then joined Zaragoza before signing for Real Madrid; at both clubs he achieved a high of 17 goals per season.
His achievements… During the nine seasons in which he played in Liga BBVA with the side from Aragon and the capital outfit, the Argentine scored a total of 86 goals. It was during his time with Los Blancos that he boosted his trophy cabinet, winning one Copa de la Liga de España (1984/85), three consecutive Liga BBVA titles (1985/86, 1986/97, 1987/88) y two UEFA Europa League (1984/85, 1985/86). Also, with his national side he won the 1986 FIFA World Cup, scoring four goals in the process.
After hanging up his boots… Valdano retired at 33 after a final season with Real Madrid. After a brief break, he started a coaching career in 1992, taking charge of Tenerife, Real Madrid and Valencia. He then became Director General and Presidential Aid at Real Madrid until 2011, when he left the club.
Did you know… During his years as the Madrid coach he gave legend Raúl González Blanco his debut in 1994.
