Previously… Francisco Buyo Sánchez (Betanzos, La Coruña, 1958) was a goalkeeper who took his first steps in football with teams in Galicia like Ural CF and Betanzos CF. His next step would be at RCD Mallorca, before going onto guard the goal for RC Deportivo, SD Huesca, Sevilla FC and finally Real Madrid.
His achievements… During 11 seasons with the Madrid side, Buyo won an admirable list of honours. The incredible figure of six Liga BBVA titles (1986/87, 1987/88, 1988/89, 1989/90, 1994/95, 1996/97), four Spanish Supercups (1988/89, 1989/90, 1990/91, 1993/94), and two Copas del Rey (1989 y 1993). Moreover, on an individual level, the goalkeeper won two Zamora trophies, the first in 1989 and the second in 1992.
After hanging up his boots… At 38-years-old, in 1997, Buyo took off his gloves and left professional football. A year later he was awarded the Medal for Merit in Work. Despite not appearing as a star on the field, he has continued to be tied to the world of football. He started a business dedicated to artificial surfaces and works with various media programmes dedicated to Spanish football.
Did you know?… He debuted with the Spanish international team with the under-21s with whom he played in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Three years after that competition, Buyo made his senior international debut in a match between Spain and Malta which booked Spain’s place at the 1984 European Championships
