Previously…Gustavo Augusto Poyet (Montevideo, Uruguay, 1967) was a central midfielder who played seven seasons for R. Zaragoza. He moved on to English football where he lined out for Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur.

His achievements… During his seven campaigns in the R. Zaragoza jersey, the Uruguayan lifted two titles: the Copa del Rey in 1994 and the UEFA Cup one year later. He played 239 games with the team from Aragón in the Liga BBVA scoring 63 goals.

After hanging up his boots… After his retirement he got into bench life as coach of Swindon Town, later becoming an assistant at Leeds United and Tottenham where he worked with Juande Ramos. In 2009 the opportunity to coach a side came up again, this time with Brighton & Hove Albion and in 2013 he was signed by Sunderland AFC, a job from which he was dismissed in March of this year.

Did you know?… Poyet was a key player in the Zaragoza side that brought so much joy to its fans. Proof was that the Uruguayan started and played the full ninety minutes of the historic final of the UEFA Cup-Winners’ Cup where los maños (The Aragonese) defeated Arsenal FC. Not only that, in the same year he won the Copa América with Uruguay and was named player of the tournament.
