Sunday's action got underway in the shape of two engrossing semi-final encounters in which the impressive talent in Spanish youth football once more shone through. In the first semi, Atletico Madrid beat R. Sporting on penalties, having come from behind – not for the first time in the tournament – to earn a 1-1 draw in normal play. The hosts later joined the Rojiblancos in the final by thrashing Real Madrid 4-0 with a masterclass of free-flowing football and attacking ruthlessness.
As for the final, Villarreal did not have things all their own way, but eventually ran out 3-1 winners in another absorbing affair. Paco Tekaling gave the eventual champs the lead with a stunner from outside the box and, although Alejandro Garnacho drew Atletico level from a corner, late goals from Daniel Delgado and Paco, the latter with an excellent free-kick, handed the hosts the crown.
This is Villarreal's second LaLiga Promises title, having previously tasted glory in the 16th edition of the event in Brunete, in 2007. The Yellow Submarine succeed Sevilla FC, who won the 2015 tournament, which was also held in Villarreal.
