News

MON 02.09.2024

It was an extremely busy week for Spanish football, with two rounds of LALIGA EA SPORTS action taking place and with the summer transfer window coming to a close. The most important headlines from the past seven days are outlined and discussed below.

Hansi Flick’s FC Barcelona remain perfect

FC Barcelona are the league leaders after four matchdays, having collected 12 points from 12 to begin the new LALIGA EA SPORTS season. Hansi Flick’s side have been very impressive, and they put on a show in Matchday 4 by thrashing Real Valladolid 7-0, with Raphinha scoring a hat-trick.

Correa is Atlético de Madrid’s hero in Bilbao

Atlético de Madrid secured an important 1-0 victory away at Athletic Club in Matchday 4, and Ángel Correa was the hero for Los Colchoneros as he came off the bench to score a 92nd minute winner. The Argentinian made the most of a late opportunity, created by summer signing Alexander Sørloth, and it means Atleti sit on eight points as they enter the September international break.

Kylian Mbappé fires Real Madrid to victory over Real Betis

Real Madrid are also on eight points, after a 2-0 victory over Real Betis on Sunday. Kylian Mbappé scored his first LALIGA EA SPORTS goal in the 67th minute of the match and then, just eight minutes later, he netted his second, converting a penalty kick. The Frenchman is now up and running in Spain’s first division, and has three total goals for his new club, having also scored in the UEFA Super Cup.

A very good week for Girona FC

Girona FC added six points to their tally this past week, by securing victories in the midweek Matchday 3 and the weekend’s Matchday 4. After thrashing CA Osasuna 4-0 at home on Thursday, they won 2-0 away at Sevilla FC on Sunday.

Deportivo Alavés are flying

Another club who secured two victories from the past two matchdays was Deportivo Alavés, as the Basque side won 2-1 away at Real Sociedad and then 2-0 at home against UD Las Palmas. Luis García Plaza’s side are now on to seven points and sit sixth in the table.

Valencia CF get off the mark

There was a Valencian Community derby on Saturday and it was a gripping match, one which finished 1-1 between Valencia CF and Villarreal CF. That was the first point of the season for Valencia CF, and means that every LALIGA EA SPORTS club now has at least one point on the board.

The 2024 summer transfer window comes to a close

Friday was the final day of the 2024 summer transfer window, and there were several eye-catching deadline day deals. Among the late transfers which stood out were Sébastien Haller to CD Leganés, Giovani Lo Celso to Real Betis, Chiquinho to RCD Mallorca, Arnaut Danjuma to Girona FC, Orri Óskarsson to Real Sociedad and Fábio Silva to UD Las Palmas.

James Rodríguez is a Rayo Vallecano player

One of the other eye-catching transfers from the final week of the window was Rayo Vallecano’s acquisition of James Rodríguez. The Colombian playmaker is back in LALIGA EA SPORTS, where he played 85 times for Real Madrid, and adds some star power to Los Franjirrojos’ midfield.

CA Osasuna renew Aimar Oroz until 2029

In the minutes before kick-off of CA Osasuna vs RC Celta on Sunday, the club from Pamplona made a special announcement on the video scoreboard at El Sadar. The fans were informed that Aimar Oroz had signed a new contract, one which will run until 2029. Oroz went on to celebrate that news by helping his team win the game 3-2.

Spain’s European participants learn their fixtures

The draws for the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League were held this past week, meaning the seven Spanish clubs participating in Europe this season now know who they’ll play and when in the new league phase format. Among the fixtures to look forward to are FC Barcelona vs Bayern Munich, Liverpool vs Real Madrid and Girona FC vs Arsenal.
