News

MAR 01.10.2024

This past week was a momentous one in Spanish football, especially as none of the top four teams in the LALIGA EA SPORTS table managed to secure a victory. The main results from the past weekend are discussed below, along with the rest of the week’s major headlines.

The Madrid Derby finishes in a 1-1 draw

The biggest game of Matchday 8 was the Madrid Derby between Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid. It was an intense game and it finished as a 1-1 final score. After Éder Militão opened the scoring, Ángel Correa equalised deep into stoppage time to level the scores and to ensure both these teams are still unbeaten.

FC Barcelona suffer their first defeat of the LALIGA EA SPORTS season

They remain league leaders, but FC Barcelona are no longer invincible. Hansi Flick’s side were able to win their first seven games of the 2024/25 LALIGA EA SPORTS season, surging into first place in the table, where they remain. However, Barça suffered a 4-2 loss away at CA Osasuna on Saturday to mean they no longer boast a 100 percent record.

Draws on the road in the Europa League

The league phase of the 2024/25 Europa League kicked off this past midweek, and both Athletic Club and Real Sociedad started with a point. They each earned a commendable 1-1 away draw, with Athletic Club earning their point away at AS Roma and Real Sociedad doing so when they visited Nice.

RCD Mallorca are flying

The Jagoba Arrasate era at RCD Mallorca is off to a great start. Under the new coach, the islanders have collected 14 points from eight games, most recently winning 2-1 away at Real Valladolid on Friday night. That places them fifth in the table, and the club’s fans are starting to dream of a return to Europe.

Athletic Club want to make the Champions League

It’s clear that Athletic Club have what it takes to fight for Champions League qualification this season. After making it to the Europa League last year, the Basque outfit are now aiming for the top four and they currently sit in fourth place, having taken 10 points from their past four matches.

Getafe CF secure their first win of the season

Matchday 8 was an important one for Getafe CF, who secured their first victory of the season. They had competed well in several other games already this term, but finally achieved a three-point haul when they overcame Deportivo Alavés 2-0, thanks to a Mauro Arambarri goal and a Luis Milla own goal.

Lo Celso is loving life back at Real Betis

Since he returned to Real Betis, Giovani Lo Celso has been phenomenal for Los Verdiblancos. The Argentinian has scored five goals in five games for the Andalusian outfit, the most recent being the only goal of the game as Real Betis defeated RCD Espanyol 1-0.

A new contract for García Pimienta

Sevilla FC announced this past week that coach García Pimienta has renewed his contact at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán until 2027. Although the tactician only joined the club in the summer, the Andalusian institution decided to show their trust in him by adding an extra year to his contract.

Successful surgery for Ter Stegen

It was confirmed this past week that FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a complete rupture in the patella tendon in his right knee. The German player had to go for a surgery, which was successfully carried out on Monday.

The date and kick-off time of ELCLASICO is confirmed

The exact date and kick-off time for the first ELCLASICO of 2024/25 has been confirmed. Real Madrid and FC Barcelona will resume their historic rivalry at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu at 21:00 CEST on Saturday October 26th.
