The magic 78-points mark

With the second half of the Liga Adelante season now underway, the clubs in the mix are starting to do their sums to see just what will be needed points-wise to gain promotion to the promised land.

The end of the season may yet still be some way off, but this hasn't stopped many of the Liga Adelante sides clutching for their calculators to see exactly what they've got to do in their remaining fixtures to finish amongst the top six, and be in with a chance of promotion to the top flight.

Since the introduction of the play-offs (in the 2010/11 season) the average points total required for automatic promotion to the Liga BBVA has been 78.4. Although there have been years in which the team finishing in second has ended the season on a lower points tally, a case in point being RC Deportivo who finished the 2013/14 campaign on 69 points. However, the play-offs system gives the side finishing down in sixth a shot at promotion to the Liga BBVA. Cordoba did just that in 2013/14, when a points tally of 61 saw the Andalusians bring an end to their 42-year absence from the top tier.

D. Alaves are in pole position in the Liga Adelante and the 46 points they've collected so far this term means that they are very much on track to go up. As long as they keep picking up points as they have been doing up until now, the Basque outfit will finish the season on 78 points, which is the average points tally required to finish in the division's top two.

The real battle in La Liga Adelante looks like being for second place, a position currently occupied by CD Leganes, who are on 40 points. Elche CF sit down in eighth position, but yet are only two points off second spot. The teams lying between CD Leganes and Elche CF are: Cordoba CF, Real Oviedo, At. Osasuna, CD Mirandes and Gimnastic. May battle commence!
