Past Disappointment

The disastrous play-off final they experienced last year made UD Las Palmas reflect on what could have been in order to make sure that things went well this campaign. They’d let glory slip through their fingers when it was almost theirs. It wasn’t going to happen again. Neither the supporters nor the team missed the opportunity to recover. Zaragoza found themselves leading the tie up to the last minutes, but Araujo came to the rescue to give back the Canarian side the glory that they’d had snatched from them previously.

Araujo

He’s Las Palmas No. 10; and he’s a 10 in all its meanings. The Argentinian has been the team’s outstanding player. At the age of 23, ‘El Chino’ has responded to the expectation he created and he scored 24 goals. The last of them was so important that it meant promotion. This year represents the coming of age of a striker who is aiming for the top.

Offensive Potential

The great offensive ability of this team has been one of the strong points for Paco Herrera’s men. In fact, despite only having won a play-off place, the yellows were the joint highest scoring team in the division with Real Betis (73 goals). Apart from Araujo; Nauzet, Tana, Asdrúbal, Figueroa and Guzmán Casaseca, amongst others, have all helped give Las Palmas a high level of efficiency in front of goal.

Paco Herrera

He’s the living image of promotion. He achieved it with RC Celta de Vigo in 2012 and he’s done it again with UD Las Palmas. His teams are characterised by an offensive and adventurous playing style, which translates into teams who score goals by the bundle at the same time as being highly competitive.

Home-grown Core

The idea was clear. Don’t ponder on the past so that the future comes quicker. The bitter taste of the previous year was only of any value if it could be used to strengthen belief in the possibility to win promotion the next time. More than 90% of the squad is home-grown, one of the reasons they were able to get back up, 13 years after having been relegated from the top division.
