The Liga Adelante had a more international feel than usual last weekend. The latest round of games produced a historic event: A Liberian scored in the competition for the first time. His name is William Jebor, a striker with SD Ponferradina, who hails from the Liberian capital Monrovia. Jebor has played 16 games for the El Bierzo club and netted Ponferradina's winning goal against SD Huesca. The striker made it 2-1 and, as the ball crossed the line, LaLiga crossed another frontier.
Players from around the globe also made headlines in Bilbao Athletic v Gimnastic, with the Japanese midfielder Daisuke Suzuki making his debut at San Mames for the Catalan side, after joining the club in February. Two other overseas players also made their mark in this game: Cameroon’s Achille Emana netted a brace and Giorgi Aburjania, of Georgia, scored the second in the away team’s 4-0 win.
Serbia’s Dejan Lekic, a striker with Girona FC, also found the back of the net against CD Leganes, but the Madrid outfit’s Argentine player, Alex Szymanowski, responded with a sublime assist for David Timor to level the scores, with the game ending 1-1.
In addition to those mentioned, many more players from abroad add to the action and spectacle in the Liga Adelante week in week out. Perhaps one of the the best examples is Florin Andone. The Romania striker, who plays for Cordoba CF, is the third highest scorer in the division with a total of 13 goals, behind Sergio Leon and David Rodriguez.
