The battle for promotion, more exciting than ever

The Liga Adelante is poised for an exciting end to what has been an evenly-matched league campaign: There are only three matches left to play and nothing has yet been decided in the race for promotion.

With only three matches left and nine points on the line, until the end of the season, there are thirteen teams chasing promotion. That is how things stand as the Liga Adelante begins to wind down, brimming with excitement and competition.

D. Alaves are the current league leaders after they beat DS Ponferradina and CD Leganes lost to SD Huesca at the weekend. Alaves are top of the table on 68 points, but Leganes are hot on their heels on 65 and Gimnastic lie just behind them on 64 points. The Catalans still dream of automatic promotion given that they are only four points behind the leaders. The final Matchday of the season could prove decisive for two of the top three teams as Nastic face Alaves in a game that could decide everything.

The automatic promotion places have yet to be decided, but that is not all. Who will qualify for the playoffs? That is the question that many are asking with only three matches left to play. Teams as far down the table as 14th-placed CD Numancia are still in with a shout at the playoffs. As it stands, At. Osasuna, R. Zaragoza and Girona FC are fourth (61 points), fifth (60 points) and sixth (59 points) respectively, but there is still time for that to change. Nothing is set in stone just yet.

With 6th-placed Girona on 59 points, R. Oviedo (59 points), AD Alcorcon (58), Cordoba CF (58), Elche CF (56), CD Lugo (54), CD Tenerife (54), CD Mirandes (52) and Numancia (51) all have one goal: to take each of their three remaining fixtures as a final, because all eight teams can still mathematically finish in the top six. Oviedo are the closest to their goal, as they are on the same points as Girona, but their last three matches are against top six opposition: Leganes, Zaragoza and Osasuna.

Meanwhile, Alcorcon and Cordoba are both currently on 58 points, just one point behind the chasing pack. Alcorcon still have to play three of their direct rivals for promotion: Tenerife, Girona and Elche, whilst Elche face Mirandes, RCD Mallorca and UD Almeria. The other teams can all still mathematically climb the table. All of them have must-win games if they want to remain in the race for promotion. These include: Alcorcon v Elche, Lugo v Nastic, Alcorcon v Tenerife, Mirandes v Cordoba, Numancia v Lugo and Alaves v Numancia.

As the league campaign draws to a close, it is all to play for in the Liga Adelante and we want to enjoy every exciting minute of the last three matches using the hashtag #FinalLigaAdelante.
