Ten things you might not know about Nuevo Los Carmenes

  • Before moving into Nuevo Los Carmenes, Granada played their games in Los Carmenes, which used to be placed at a different site from where the current stadium is today.
  • Its name comes from the typical Granada construction known as ´Carmen´, a house having both a decorative and vegetable garden. It is usually surrounded by tall walls and vegetation. They are very common in neighborhoods like Albaicin.
  • It was opened on the 16th of May, 1995, with a friendly match between Real Madrid CF and Bayer 04 Leverkusen and which ended 1-0 in favor of the Madrid Squad.
  • Oscar scored the first official goal during the clash which the U-21 Spanish national team played against Armenia and finished with a local victory (4-0).
  • Granada was a host in this field for the first time in a match against Marmol Macael, in which they were defeated 0-1.
  • One year after its opening, it hosted the opening ceremony of the 33th World Championship of Alpine Skiing, which was held in the Ski Resort of Sierra Nevada.
  • Nuevo Los Carmenes has witnessed various matches of the Spanish national team. The national group has faced up to four different rivals: Chipre (6-0), Russia (1-0), Bulgaria (1-0) and Czech Republic (2-1).
  • Every summer they celebrate the Los Carmenes Trophy competition. The first edition was held in 1973 in Los Carmenes between CD Malaga, Peñarol and OKF Belgrade. Then it was demolished and Granada moved into Nuevos Los Carmenes, where the competition has been played ever since.
  • It is also a pitch of records. On the 25th of March, 2011, Xavi Hernandez played his 100th match in this stadium with the Spanish national team against the Czech Republic. Moreover, Villa scored two goals and overtook Raul as maximum scorer in the national team.
  • It used to have a capacity for 16,000 spectators but when it was promoted to Liga BBVA, it was enlarged to over 22,000 capacity seating.
