  • The construction of the new tramline between Vigo and Baiona forced Celta to leave the stadium of Coia, where they played since their origin, and initiate the Balaidos project.
  • It was opened on the 30th of December, 1928, in a match between the Galician squad and Real Union de Irun.
  • Initially, it was called Stadium Balaidos.
  • The first game at the stadium ended with Celta de Vigo’s victory 6-0. Graciliano scored the first goal in the history of the stadium.
  • The price of the tickets for that match was from 2 to 5 pesetas (old Spanish coin).
  • Since its beginning, not only football matches were played in the stadium. There were also roller-hockey games, athletics events, horse competitions and festivals.
  • Civilian and religious authorities attended the opening ceremony. The archpriest of Santa Maria’s Parish, Faustino Ande, officiated the blessing ceremony of the stadium, which he ended saying: “¡Viva Galicia! ¡Viva Vigo! ¡Viva el Celta!” (‘Hail Galicia! Hail Vigo! Hail Celta!’).
  • Maria de la Concepcion Gregorio Alvarez, who was the Mayor of Vigo’s daughter, made the honorary kickoff. Her father, Adolfo Gregorio Espino, was the Mayor of Vigo between 1923 and 1927.
  • After being properly refurbished, the stadium hosted three matches of the Spain World Cup in 1982.
  • The Vigo stadium has also hosted some of the more important concerts that have taken place in the city, such as Madonna, The Rolling Stones or Dire Straits.
