Sporting come away from Butarque with three priceless points

R. Sporting defeated CD Leganés 0-1 on matchday 29 of the Liga Adelante, Fernando Velasco’s own goal seeing the Asturian outfit pick up three valuable points to go provisionally top, depending on the outcome of Sunday’s clash between UD Las Palmas and Real Betis.

After an even start to the match in which neither side was clearly on top, it was the visitors who struck. With 12 minutes on the clock, Juan Muñiz delivered a free-kick from wide, and Velasco was unfortunate to flick a backwards header into his own net. Despite conceding, Leganés remained unfazed and looked to level before the break, but Sporting were in solid, disciplined mood in defence.

The pattern of the game did not change in the second half. The hosts, with a fervent support getting right behind them, carried the initiative throughout and threw themselves at their opponents’ area in search of the equaliser. However, Abelardo Fernández’s men proved equal to Leganés’s attacks, putting in an impeccable defensive display to leave Butarque with three precious points.
