Best possible start for Barcelona
FC Barcelona could not have got off to a better start, lighting up the Gran Canaria Stadium scoreboard with just six minutes on the clock. Andres Iniesta linked up with Jordi Alba and the left-back served up Luis Suarez on a plate to make it 1-0. The striker got among the goals yet again and has now netted a total of 25 in the Liga BBVA.
Rapid response
UD Las Palmas were undaunted by going a goal down. In fact, they managed to respond almost immediately, levelling the score in the 10th minute with a Willian Jose strike. The Brazilian forward made the most of an exquisite backheel pass from Jonathan Viera and put the ball past Claudio Bravo from the heart of the penalty area.
Javi Varas’ heroics were not enough
The Azulgranas managed to put themselves back in the ascendency on the 39-minute mark. Luis Suarez produced a fine individual piece of play on the right of the area, getting away from Pedro Bigas and playing in Lionel Messi. The Argentine unleashed a powerful strike, but the goalkeeper, Javi Varas, made a memorable block. However, Neymar was there to pounce on the rebound and send it goal-bound.
Spirited Las Palmas performance
The islanders continued to give a good account of themselves in the second half and made things difficult for their opponents. In fact, Quique Setien’s men almost equalised again. A swirling strike by Viera was pushed away by Bravo and Willian Jose managed to get on the end of the rebound but failed to hit the target. Sergio Araujo also came close to levelling the scores, skimming the far post with his shot across the face of goal.
The run continues
Barcelona have now gone 32 games undefeated in all competitions, standing at 17 without a loss in the Liga BBVA. Sevilla FC were the last team to undo Luis Enrique’s side, back on Matchday 7 of the competition.
