Rip-roaring opening half-hour from Villarreal
The hosts completely dictated proceedings for the first 30 minutes, in which they dominated possession and created the clearer goalscoring opportunities. On 18 minutes, Soldado handed his side the lead with a drive from the edge of the box after some neat build-up play involving Denis Suarez, Leo Baptistao and Soldado himself.
Cop's chance
After such a positive start from the hosts, Malaga CF kicked themselves into action and started to get a foothold in the game in the final quarter of the first half. The best chance for Javi Gracia's charges fell the way of Duje Cop, but the Boquerones striker was denied by a superb Alphonse Areola save which kept his side in the ascendancy.
Heroics from Areola
Villarreal have now gone six games on the bounce without conceding at the Madrigal. In a repeat of his performances in previous matchdays, the French custodian produced an impressive display to keep the Blanquiazules at bay.
Malaga kept knocking on the door
After a rather lacklustre first-half showing, the Andalusians were much improved after the break. Gracia's troops pushed higher up the field, a change which saw them fashion several openings. Juanpi, Ignacio Camacho and Fernando Tissone all came mighty close to netting the equaliser which ultimately proved elusive for the visitors.
On-song Villarreal
The Yellow Submarine are bobbing along very nicely indeed right now and this latest victory sees them extend their unbeaten streak to 11, having recorded eight wins and three draws along the way. After another weekend of action, Marcelino's side will once again retain fourth spot in the standings.
