Leicester City 2-0 Sevilla FC (3-2 agg.)
Two goals either side of half time were enough for Leicester City to mount a second-leg comeback and knock Sevilla out of the Champions League. Leading 2-1 from the first leg at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, Jorge Sampaoli’s side lost 2-0 and fell short of a first-ever Champions League quarter final.
The home side started strongly and put Sevilla under pressure from the off but it was the LaLiga side who had the first clear-cut opportunity of the game when Samir Nasri forced a good save from Kasper Schmeichel after only three minutes. Leicester took the lead just before the half-hour mark, however, as Wes Morgan finished a free kick in from the left at the far post in the 27th minute.
Trailing 1-0 at the break – and Leicester leading on away goals – Sevilla made changes as they searched for an equaliser, bringing on Stevan Jovetic and Mariano in place of Pablo Sarabia and Gabriel Mercado. They could have drawn level shortly after the restart when Sergio Escudero rattled the crossbar with a shot from over 30 yards but instead found themselves two goals down after Marc Albrighton beat Sergio Rico with a low shot from the edge of the area in the 54th minute.
Samir Nasri saw red on 74 minutes for a second bookable offence but Sevilla were handed the chance to cut the deficit and force extra time with 10 minutes remaining when Vitolo was brought down in the box by Kasper Schmeichel. Steven N’Zonzi stepped up, only to see his spot kick saved by Schmeichel low down to his left. It was the Dane’s second penalty save of the tie, having previously kept out Joaquin Correa from 12 yards in the first leg. The visitors pushed forward as full time approached but Leicester ultimately held on to progress to the quarter finals.
