SCC Napoli 1-3 Real Madrid (2-6 aggregate)
Napoli took the game to Madrid as they looked to turnaround a 3-1 defeat from the first leg at the Bernabeu. Roared on by a partisan home crowd they took the lead on the night through Dries Mertens. The forward was played into the area by Marek Hamsik after a flowing passing move and he fired low inside the far post in the 24th minute. Zindeine Zidane’s men almost hit back immediately. Cristiano Ronaldo dribbled around Napoli keeper Pepe Reina but his shot cannoned back off the post. Mertens hit the post just before the break but Los Blancos lifted their game in the second half.
Sergio Ramos headed home from a Toni Kroos corner in the 51st minute and grabbed a second soon after. The Spain centre-back got his head to another Kroos corner and it deflected off Mertens and into the roof of the net for his 12th strike in 100 appearances in European competition – eight of them headers. At the end Cristiano Ronaldo broke away and shot at goal where Reina parried his shot, and substitute Alvaro Morata pounced to hammer home Madrid’s third making it 6-2 on aggregate. The holders extended their unbeaten run in the competition to 12 games, with seven wins and five draws.
