Unrewarded endeavour
Valencia CF controlled the game early on. Gary Neville's men had a number of chances to open the scoring with Alvaro Negredo, Sofiane Feghouli and Aymen Abdennour all going close. R. Sporting keeper Ivan Cuellar also played his part, making a great save from Pablo Piatti.
Treble chance
Sporting improved as the minutes went by and started to put pressure on the home area. They almost scored just before halftime, in a scramble in Cuellar's area. The visiting goalkeeper was quick to save Negredo’s shot, while the newcomer Ognjen Vranjes threw himself in the way of follow up efforts from Feghouli and Piatti.
Paraguayan Sanabria
Everything changed in the second half. Sporting broke the deadlock from the penalty spot five minutes after the re-start. Sanabria struck his 10th goal of the season adding to the hat-trick he netted against Real Sociedad last weekend.
Valencia hit the post
The home side reacted swiftly, but the Asturians had luck and the post on their side. At a corner Spain striker Negredo connected well, but his header hit the post.
End to an outstanding streak
After 22 Liga BBVA games unbeaten at Mestalla, Valencia suffered their first home defeat since losing 1-0 against FC Barcelona on the 30th November 2014, when Sergio Busquets grabbed a stoppage-time winner.
