Romania's deeply rooted LaLiga love affair

As many as 37 players with Romanian passports have left their mark on the competition, as Romanian journalist Silviu Corneanu explains.

Romanians love LaLiga (who doesn't?)! For us it is one of the most spectacular football championships. LaLiga is also home to the biggest rivalry in the world. When FC Barcelona take on Real Madrid, Romanian football fans are divided into two big groups and every match that we watch is a huge spectacle full of excitement, breath-taking skill and of course, stunning goals.

But we love LaLiga for many reasons. We have strong connections with you and are proud to say that some of our most prominent players plied their trade in this championship. The list is extensive and is not only formed by players.

Our coaches are also an important part of your league. Gheorghe Hagi (Real Madrid, FC Barcelona), Gheorghe Popescu (Barcelona), Cosmin Contra (Atletico Madrid, Getafe CF), Costantin Galca (RCD Espanyol, RCD Mallorca, Villarreal CF, UD Almeria), Gheorghe Craioveanu (Real Sociedad, Villarreal, Getafe), Adrian Ilie (Valencia), Miodrag Belodedici (Valencia, Villarreal), Ilie Dumitrescu (Sevilla FC), to name but a few.

One of the most successful Romanian players to grace LaLiga to date is Gheorghe Popescu, who was the captain of Barcelona and managed to win an international trophy with Los Azulgranas, but let's not forget Gheorghe Craioveanu and Constantin Galca who spent over ten years playing in Spain…

Our connections with Spanish football are far from a mere remnant of the past. Now Romanians follow Espanyol (because of Constanstin Galca), Rayo Vallecano (because of Razvan Rat) and Cordoba CF (because of Florin Andone who we hope to see back in the Liga BBVA next season).

The fact that LaLiga is the most watched championship in Romania is proved by the audience figures. Romanians can watch LaLiga on Digi Sport, the official broadcaster that shows every match each week on our four channels and on our website. Seeing every game involving Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico, Valencia, Espanyol, Sevilla, etc. live is a dream come true for many Romanians. What else could you possibly want?
