Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend their title in the Champions League era when they overcame Juventus 4-1 in Cardiff with a double from Cristiano Ronaldo and a goal each for Casemiro and Marco Asensio.
Under a closed roof in the National Stadium of Wales in Cardiff it was Keylor Navas who was first called into action when he dived to save from Miralem Pjanic. But Madrid responded. Dani Carvajal broke down the right and pulled the ball back in the area for Cristiano Ronaldo to sweep home the opener in the 20th minute. The Portugal forward became the first player to score in three separate Champions League finals, netting Real Madrid’s 500th goal in the competition.
Juventus levelled seven minutes later, when Mario Mandzukic scored with a stunning overhead kick that looped in over Navas to leave the scores at 1-1 going into the break. Madrid continued to press forward and it was Casemiro who restored Madrid’s advantage when he hit a low drive which took a hefty deflection off Sami Khedira’s calf and flew in the corner.
Madrid tightened their grip on the trophy when Luka Modric burst to the byline and pulled the ball back in towards the near post where Cristiano Ronaldo arrived to angle the ball past Gianluigi Buffon. The goal took him on to 12 for the season in the Champions League and took him past Lionel Messi to become the leading scorer in the competition for a fifth year in a row.
Substitite Marco Asensio wrapped up the scoring at the end, scoring from Marcelo’s low cross and the celeberations took off on the pitch moments later with the final whistle.
