Real Madrid vs Sevilla - the conquerors of Europe meet again at the Bernabéu

The holders of the Champions League and Europa League meet at the home of Los Blancos in one of the most exciting fixtures in the Liga BBVA.

Real Madrid CF - Sevilla FC, Sevilla FC - Real Madrid CF: two of the most important teams in Spanish football face off in the Santiago Bernabéu in a match that promises to be full of excitement and goals. A total of 114 goals have been scored in matches between the two teams in the 21st century, encounters full of emotion, celebrations and majestic skill.

And this year the two teams go into the match as reigning European champions after conquering the UEFA Champions League andthe UEFA Europa League respectively last season. The two teams have already met once this campaign, in the UEFA Super Cup in Cardiff, which Madrid ended up winning 2-0 thanks to a brace by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Recent meetings

  • In this fixture last season Gareth Bale scored his first goal in the Santiago Bernabéu. The date was 30 October 2013. Madrid’s number 11 converted a cross from Karim Benzema to open the scoring in an epic match that finished with Madrid winning 7-3. This was the highest scoring match ever between the two sides.
  • Sevilla beat Real Madrid 2-1 at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán to dent  Real Madrid’s title hopes. On 26 March 2014 Carlo Ancelottis side travelled south aiming to keep the pressure on title rivals Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona but Carlos Bacca lead Sevilla to victory by scoring a brace. The winning goal was created by a majestic flick and pass by Iván Rakitić.

  • Unai Emery is searching for his first away win against Real Madrid. The Basque coach has visited the Santiago Bernabéu seven times, with a record of six defeats and just one draw. If Sevilla manage to win in Madrid, Emery will have beaten Los Blancos five times and pulled off successive triumphs, after beating Madrid 2-1 last term. 
  • Madrid-Sevilla is the highest scoring fixture in Spanish football in recent years. The teams have met 26 times since the turn of the century, scoring 114 goals between them, an average of 4.3 goals per game.       

Both Carlo Ancelotti and Unai Emery feel an enormous respect for each other’s teams. The Italian revealed before the game that he enjoys watching Sevilla play, prompting Emery to respond: "I also like watching Madrid. Ancelotti is a renowned coach, and it’s great to be able to come up against him".
