Real Madrid dominated possession in the first half but struggled to break down a well-organised AS Roma side who were always dangerous on the break. Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo forced saves from Wojciech Szczesny, while down the other end Edin Dzeko and Mohamed Salah both fired wide when well-placed after lightning quick counters.
Szczesny saved after a goalmouth scramble early in the second half, while the hosts had to be alert as Keylor Navas made smart stops first from Alessandro Florenzi and then Kostas Manolas.
Madrid broke the deadlock when substitute Lucas Vazquez rounded his marker and crossed to the near post where Ronaldo volleyed in from close range after 64 minutes. It was his 90th goal in Europe’s elite club competiton.

Roma were still reeling when Ronaldo burst away on a counter-attack shortly after, fed James Rodriguez, and the Colombian scored from a tight angle as the ball went between Szczesny’s legs. Roma hit the post at the end but the tie was over by then and the hosts moved into the last eight.
