A beauty from Benzema

Real Madrid could not have got off to a better start in their match against Sevilla. After a few moments of mutual measuring up from the two sides, Karim Benzema had the Bernabéu on their feet with his spectacular goal. The Frenchman picked up a cross in from the right by Gareth Bale and right-hooked a perfect volley past Sergio Rico.

Cruise control

The Spanish outfit breezed through the Andalusian team's defensive line. Unai Emery tried to close Los Blancos down by piling on the pressure, but Real easily found the spaces. Zinedine Zidane's team came close to inflicting even more damage on Sevilla but for a superb save from Sergio Rico which deflected Bale's effort against the post.

Keylor Navas, decisive

Real Madrid were in control but Sevilla had a chance to equalise after a penalty awarded for an action by Raphael Varane on Adil Rami. Kevin Gameiro stepped up to the mark but was thwarted by Keylor Navas. The Costa Rican anticipated the kick and batted away the penalty to keep his team ahead.

Sevilla respond

The locals could have tipped things even more in their favour if Cristiano Ronaldo had successfully put away the spot kick that came as a result of Jose Reyes's challenge on Luca Modric. The Portuguese player sent the ball over Sergio Rico's goal just before Sevilla's hopes of levelling the scores were momentarily raised by a disallowed goal from Gameiro.

All wrapped up

Los Blancos were in the driving seat and started to reap the rewards heading into the final stretch. Cristiano Ronaldo cranked things up by seizing an opportunity to score and then, just two minutes later, Bale finished an assist served up by Benzema. That goal made the Welsh forward the highest scoring British player in Liga BBVA history, as he moved on to 43 goals, passing Gary Lineker's mark of 42.

Sevilla put Keylor Navas against the ropes for a last minute face-saving attempt before Jese Rodriguez completed the goal fest for Real Madrid.
