Ayestaran took the helm at Mestalla on a short-term basis at the end of March, replacing Gary Neville. The Basque tactician previously served as the assistant coach at Valencia from 2001 to 2004, helping the club win two Liga BBVA titles and a Copa del Rey, and he subsequently reprised this role as a number 2 at Liverpool. As a head coach, he has managed Maccabi Tel Aviv, Tecos and Santos Laguna.
