This past Saturday, LaLiga took another step forward in its commitment to innovation and new ways of consuming sport. The Women's First Division match between Atletico Madrid and Athletic Club was the first game ever to be streamed through Facebook. With the help of beIN SPORTS – the competition's official broadcaster in Spain – and both clubs, LaLiga delivered a watershed moment in the world of sports broadcasting.
The initiative was a big hit. A total of 370,311 unique users checked out the game between the Colchoneras and the Basque outfit, with up to 5,620 spectators watching simultaneously.
The event's resounding success is further illustrated by the number of overall views and the fact that the stream, which was divided into two posts because of Facebook Live's 90-minute limit, had a reach of 2,289,675 users.
One of LaLiga's goals for this project was to make top-class football accessible to everyone. Mission accomplished. Indeed, the match generated engagement (reactions, comments and shares) from 55,215 people.
The success of this stream is a further example of LaLiga's ongoing commitment to women's football and another milestone in its bid to embrace innovation and new technology.
