Sevilla were held to a goalless draw at home by Villarreal in a Liga BBVA matchday 36 encounter in which both sides had plenty of chances to score.
The game got off to a blistering start, with both teams looking lively in front of goal. The first chance came when a long distance effort by Vitolo was well saved by Sergio Asenjo, and then two minutes later Villarreal’s Giovani Dos Santos tried his luck from outside the box. The tempo eventually began to level out in the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán although the home side had another two good chances to open the scoring around the half hour mark through Vitolo and Alberto Moreno. However, it remained 0-0 heading into the break.
With 60 minutes almost on the clock, Kevin Gameiro nearly got the opener for Sevilla but he was unable to connect with a good Jairo Sampeiro cross. Villarreal didn’t sit back either and threatened Javi Varas’ area on a number of occasions. The away side had its best chance in the 70th minute when Mateo Musacchio missed an open net. Either side could have snatched all three points in the dying minutes, but in the end it finished all square in Seville.
