The Champions League playoff round draw on Friday did few favours for Villarreal CF, as the Yellow Submarine were paired with Monaco, who represented one of the strongest possible opponents in the draw.
Villarreal were one of the seeded sides meaning that they would avoid coming up against Manchester City, Porto, Ajax and Borussia Monchengladbach. Of the remaining teams, Roma and Monaco were the toughest tests that Marcelino's side could have been handed.

Monaco and Villarreal have never faced off in a competitive fixture before, but they did meet in a friendly at El Madrigal in 2006, with the French side running out 2-1 winners.
However, Monaco do not have fond memories of their last clash with LaLiga Santander opposition. Last term they were drawn against Valencia CF at the same stage of Champions League qualifying and were knocked out of the tournament following a 4-3 aggregate defeat.

The first leg will take place on Wednesday 17 August at the Madrigal with the return match in Monaco on Tuesday 23 August. Up for grabs are none other than golden tickets to the Champions League group phase and if the Yellow Submarine manage to secure one, LaLiga Santander will have five clubs in the competition proper for the second year running.
