After Girona FC and Real Sociedad brought the curtain down on the 25th round of LaLiga Santander action following their meeting on Monday night, the time has come to reveal the latest Fantasy MARCA Best XI.
No fewer than nine clubs are represented in this star-studded lineup, with Atletico Madrid and Real Betis the only teams to supply more than one player. However, for the fourth time this season, the Player of the Matchday honours go to FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi. The Argentine ace played an instrumental role in his side's crucial 4-2 victory over Sevilla FC, helping himself to a hat-trick and an assist to inspire the visitors to a comeback win.
On this occasion, RC Celta's Ruben Blanco gets the nod between the sticks (11 points) after his outstanding display in the Galician's goalless stalemate against D.Alaves.
The side's five-man rearguard features players from a quintet of clubs. Aissa Mandi (16) made a key contribution at both ends of the pitch in Betis's 2-0 away success over R. Valladolid CF, including a stunning acrobatic goal to open the scoring. Slotting in alongside the team's standout defender are Atleti's Brazilian stalwart Filipe Luis, SD Huesca's Xabier Etxeita, Athletic Club wing-back Yuri Berchiche, all of whom turned in 13-point performances, and La Real stopper Raul Navas (12).
This Best XI engine room is made up of a trio of midfield talents who had a big hand in their team's results last time out: Saul (13) was on target in Atlético's win over Villarreal CF, as was
Esteban Granero (10) in RCD Espanyol's 1-1 draw against Huesca, whilst Javi Garcia (10) was in inspired form in Betis's win in Valladolid.
The team's strike partnership claimed an impressive four goals and two assists between them in their respective outings. The aforementioned Messi, who chalked up 21 points on the back of his breathtaking performance at the Sánchez-Pizjuán, is joined up front by Jaime Mata (11), whose purple patch continued as he scored and provided an assist in Getafe CF's 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano.
