Tactics

Both coaches' game plans set the tone for the first half of the match, where well practised positions and strategy led to a closed game in which defensive play was key.

Grid-lock

Although Juanfran Torres, Antoine Griezmann and Saúl Ñíguez had the clearest chances for the Red-and-Whites, both teams were locked in a stand-off over the course of the match, which meant that play was scarce in either area. Sevilla, with lesser pace in the second half, were hard pressed to knock back the assaults of an Atlético side that were clearly growing stronger and getting better chances, especially from the left wing.

Griezmann puts Sevilla under pressure

The French striker had two chances in the area that failed to cross Sergio Rico's goal line. First a volley and then a shot that hit the post could easily have put Atlético ahead, but the team's lack of precision held them back.

Vitolo gets sent off

The Sevilla player was given a second yellow card after a foul on Luciano Vietto at the 61st minute. The Sevilla side had to soldier on one man down and decided to put striker Kevin Gameiro onto the pitch to bolster their offense.

Sergio Rico, under fire in the last minutes of play

Atletico managed to put the Andalusians on guard, especially in the last quarter of the match, and ran the Sevilla goalkeeper ragged in the final minutes. In the end, Sevilla kept the Red-and-Whites at bay in the Vicente Calderon Stadium and picked up a well-earned point that both teams can now add to their total.
