Lionel Messi is the FIFA Men's Player of the Year 2019. The Argentine forward received the prize at The Best awards, held in Milan (Italy) on Monday evening.
He scored 36 goals on the way to a LaLiga Santander title in 2018/19, form which earned a majority of votes from fellow professionals, coaches, journalists and fans around the world.
Messi beat Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk to first place, winning the award for a record sixth time. He follows on from another LaLiga Santander player, Real Madrid's Luka Modric, who was the Men's Player of the Year in 2018.
