UD Las Palmas ensured they will play the promotion play-off as a seeded team after beating Real Zaragoza on matchday 41 in the Liga Adelante. With this win, the Canary Islanders clinched fourth spot, while Zaragoza still have to beat off SD Ponferradina to clinch sixth place.
The first half was a very intense affair and both sides created chances, although Las Palmas made the most of their opportunities. The Islanders, playing on the counterattack and waiting for the right moment to push forward, scored two goals, the first by Sergio Araujo and the second by Jonathan Viera, who scored his sixth goal of the campaign. Even though the hosts had good chances to score in the first half, they were not able to capitalise on their opportunities.
The advantage at half-time was enough for coach Paco Herrera, who was able to bring on players like Momo and Juan Carlos Valerón in the second half. And the visitors had a chance to score a third goal late on when Guzmán Casaseca was put clean through on goal, but goalkeeper Yassine Bonou stood his ground and made the save. Ranko Popović’s side tried to respond, but Jaime Romero’s header missed the target. In the end, the 2-0 scoreline reflected the Canary Islanders sharpness in attack, and they left La Romareda with the three points.
