LaLiga continues to dominate in Europe. There will once again be three Spanish sides among the continent's eight leading lights after Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and FC Barcelona all secured a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals.
With this three-strong contingent, the Liga BBVA will be the most heavily represented national division in the last-eight draw, followed by the Bundesliga with two (Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich). Meanwhile, Portugal, France and England will all have one representative each, after Benfica, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City respectively booked their tickets.
This is the fourth straight season in which three Spanish clubs have reached the quarter-finals of the tournament. In the last three campaigns, Real Madrid, Atletico and Barça have flown the flag for Spain at this stage of the competition, while in 2012-13 it was Malaga CF who joined Los Blancos and the Catalans in the hat.
LaLiga teams have also won more Champions League/European Cup titles than the clubs from any other country, with 15 compared to 12 apiece for English and Italian outfits. Barcelona are the reigning champions and have advanced to the quarter-finals for the last nine years in a row, while Real Madrid most recently captured the trophy two seasons ago by beating Atletico in the final.
