LALIGA Studios, the joint venture between Banijay Iberia and LALIGA, has reached an agreement with Little Spain, the production company founded by internationally renowned artist C Tangana, to develop a fictional TV series set in the LALIGA universe. The project is the first production to have LALIGA's IP and the official seal of approval from a competition of this size and scope.
“We have a unique opportunity to produce the first fictional TV series that can fully utilise LALIGA's IP, its clubs, talent, stadiums, and fans to produce a level of authenticity rarely seen in football-related fiction,” explained Chalo Bonifacino Cooke, CEO of LALIGA Studios.
In turn, the Little Spain team stated that “the aim is to create a story set in the world of Spanish professional football based on the unique features of LALIGA teams, where football, culture and life come together. The project is the result of a creative collaboration with actor Josh Hutcherson, a friend and partner of Little Spain in Los Angeles. It's a milestone for Little Spain, as it allows us to tell a story that lies between two key locations: Spain and the United States. In order to capture the essence of the footballing world and its lifestyle, which is accessible to very few, the key elements will be emotion and our characteristic cinematic style”.
The project also marks a new milestone in the strategic alliance between the LALIGA-owned company and Banijay Iberia, part of Banijay Entertainment, the content powerhouse behind 130 production companies in 21 countries, and Little Spain. Last March, the two production companies, together with LALIGA, created the anthem 1voiceVSRACISM to fight racism. The song was played in all LALIGA EA SPORTS and LALIGA HYPERMOTION stadiums during the week of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, generating more than 193 million impressions, worth an average value of more than €9.7 million.
With a growing influence in the audiovisual and creative world, in June, Little Spain picked up three Gold Lions at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, one of the most important advertising awards events in the world. There, it triumphed with the video clip of the anthem that artist C Tangana - founding partner of the production company - composed for LALIGA EA SPORTS team RC Celta's centenary. This success came after their first feature-length documentary titled ‘Esta ambición desmedida’ (This unbridled ambition), was nominated for a Goya award in 2023 and tells the story of the development and making of C Tangana's influential tour for his album ‘El Madrileño’.
In just one year of operation, LALIGA Studios has completed productions for more than 100 operators broadcasting in over 190 countries around the world. It has also given birth to Límite 24H, the first programme about the summer transfer window closing, which announced the official last minute signings thanks to exclusive access to LALIGA's 7th floor and was broadcast on networks such as Movistar+, DAZN, ESPN, DirecTv and Sky TV.
Since its inception, LALIGA Studios has created content for LALIGA, as well as its main sponsors and clubs. Additionally, in its desire to be a pioneer in the world of sports entertainment, LALIGA Studios recently closed a deal for the development of football-related content with Hollywood production company MTP, formerly known as Mandalay Sports Media. This project is led by Mike Tollin, executive producer of the worldwide phenomenon The Last Dance, the documentary mini-series about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls that became the most-watched documentary in history on ESPN in the US and a record-breaking hit on Netflix.
Banijay Iberia and LALIGA joined forces last year to launch LALIGA Studios, a company led by Chalo Bonifacino Cooke. Its partnership with Little Spain reflects Banijay Entertainment's commitment to growing the sports entertainment business through new partnerships, content investments, plus mergers and acquisitions following the recent launch of Banijay Sports.
